A presentation :
‘MUSIC OF BHARATHANATYAM’
by Vid. Sumitra Nitin
On Sunday, 21st June 2015 , 11 am, at ‘Ananya’, #91/2, 4th Main, Malleswaram, Bangalore – 3.
Brief of Presentation :-‘Music of Bharathanatyam’ : Bharatanatyam is undoubtedly one of the most popular Indian classical art forms of today. This is not surprising at all as the visual spectacle it offers combined with the aural treat of Carnatic music, makes it a winning combination all the way.
The backbone of Bharatanatyam is indeed its music but amidst the glitter, this important facet is sadly sidelined. This presentation will attempt to bring the music back to the centre stage of a Bharatanatyam performance.
The music of Bharatanatyam has evolved over a span of almost a thousand years. The Bharatanatyam repertoire comprises many types of compositions that are unique to the dance stage as opposed to what is performed in music concerts.
In this presentation these compositions will be discussed supported by photographs, video and audio clips, with history, analysis, description, anecdotage and examples. The presenter will sing and dance to illustrate as well.
The duration of the presentation would be 75 mins.
About the artist: Sumitra Nitin is a Carnatic musician and Bharatanatyam dancer with a performing career spanning three decades in both art forms. She is the grand-daughter and disciple of the famous musician, Smt. Ananthalakshmi Sadagopan. Sumitra continues to hone her musical skills under the expert guidance of Guru Smt. Neela Ramgopal. In dance Sumitra has undergone extensive training in the Vazhuvoor style under Guru Smt.Rhadha. An articulate speaker, Sumitra is also known for her well researched thematic multimedia presentations.
She is the recipient of the ‘Vedavalli Memorial Heritage Award’ given by Ramu Endowments Chennai for outstanding contribution to South India’s heritage by a young achiever. Natyasruti, the music and dance school founded by Sumitra over a decade ago in Koramangala, imparts training to young students in both art forms.

Natya Rasaprabandha - June 2015
Natya Rasaprabandha is a three-day Kuchipudi dance drama fiesta organised by Subodha Fine Arts in association with Saila Sudha Academy of Dance, under the auspices of Parthasarathy Swami Sabha. The fest is happening on the 5th, 6th and 7th of June 2015 at Narada Gana Sabha from 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm.
The ultimate living legend of the Kuchipudi dance-drama tradition, Sri Vedantam Radhesyam and his troupe from the Kuchipudi village in Andhra Pradesh will be presenting three dance-dramas, namely, Parvati Parinayam, Bhama Kalapam and Bhakta Prahaladha on the three days.
The roots of the Kuchipudi art-form can be traced back to the Kuchipudi village in Andhra Pradesh where this art form originated. This graceful yet vigorous dance style started off as a dance-drama tradition and later transformed into the current version which remains within the frameworks of dance alone. Natya Rasaprabandha intends to bring to the masses the ethnic dance-drama tradition of the Kuchipudi art.
Sri. N Murali, the President of the Music Academy and the Co-Chairman, Kasturi & Sons Limited will inaugurate the festival on 5th June. Smt. Chitra Visweswaran, the Member Secretary, Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Mandram will be the guest of honour on the second day and Sri Bhagavatula Seetharama Sarma, renowned musician and Director of Kalapeetam, on the third day.
The event is a non-ticketed one and seating is based on ‘first-come first-serve’ basis. For more details, contact on +91 8056106083.
